Quiet Time Part 2: The How

Hellos! Welcome to this week’s blog post!

Last week, we explored the thought of quiet time, particularly why we have it. This week, we focus on the how.

First off, I’d just like to say, that if you feel you have fallen off the wagon in having a consistent quiet time with God, or you feel far away from Him or life has got so busy or whatever. God’s not mad at you and He wants to spend time with you. You don’t have to be perfect, just show up!

I’ll be sharing with you some practical tips and things you could inculcate in your quiet time to be more consistent and effective.

1. Know Yourself and find your own unique style

The awesome thing about quiet time, is that it doesn’t have to be one certain way.

Know yourself, what works for you and embrace your uniqueness when it comes to how you do your quiet times.

Don’t compare yourself with anybody. Are you a morning person? Then you can have your quiet times at the beginning of your day, or if you’re an evening or ‘during the day’ person, go for it.

You could even change your location, instead of being in your room, you could go for a prayer walk and appreciate God’s creation. There’s no limit!

Also, if you want to start with prayer, worship or delving into the word, know what works for you and just flow. What matters most is you have chosen to be in God’s presence and He’s right there with you.

2. Use devotionals

When I was still a babe in Christ, or rather just got started in my walk with God and learning to have personal time with Him, I really liked to do devotionals, focused on a topic I was curious about and I was curious about EVERYTHING! I wanted to know what God thought or what His word said about many topics.

I highly recommend the YouVersion bible app that you could download from Google playstore or the appstore. It has plenty of devotionals and you can search for the topic you are interested in and for sure you’d find a devotional and can pick the one that sparks your interest.

This is a great practical tip to inculcate when you sense a curiosity on a certain topic, and you would love to get a Godly perspective on it or if you want to make your quiet time interesting with some structure.

3. Put some worship music

This is all about setting the atmosphere/ mood to spend time with God effectively. I find that worship music helps to cause me to focus and declutter my spirit. It’s comforting to have a moment in the day to briefly forget about all the things that call for your attention and just rest in God. I also get revelation and direction for life through some worship songs, which is super cool!

Again, we all have different tastes and it doesn’t have to all be the same. I’m just going to share some Spotify playlists of some of the songs I jam to and help to make my quiet times more effective and I hope you can enjoy them too.

4. Listen to Sermons on YouTube or A podcast

I’m thankful that we live in a day and age that we have access to plenty of information. For quiet time, you could look up for sermons on You tube or search for podcasts on Spotify or Google podcasts.

Be intentional by settling in a quiet and peaceful place, get your notebook and listen in. Don’t just listen to what the speaker may be saying, but what God is saying to YOU through the speaker.

For Yube sermons particularly, I highly recommend Redefined TV, Apostle Joshua Selman & Michael Todd from Transformation Church.

5. Take up journaling

Personally, I like to write, it’s one of the reasons I started my blog. It’s much easier to retain information when you note it down, you can easily look at past entries and be able to track what God has done in your life, with the seasons you’ve been in, reminisce, celebrate growth and wins, plus it’s also quite therapeutic.

There’s no formula or method to this, pick up your journal and a pen. Write and just flow. It could be what’s going on in your life, what you perceive God is teaching you at a particular time, what your heart’s desires are , your fears, your burdens , what you’re grateful for, what may be frustrating or annoying you. Lord knows I have plenty of journal entries with candid explanations of what was going on then, some in colorful language hehe.

Plus, you could get a good laugh when you look back at past entries which were cringy or embarrassing and see how much you’ve grown.

You could also make things interesting by getting a cute journal with a unique cover or purchase pens, markers and felt pens with different colors, if you’re artsy. There’s really no limit to how creative you can be!

6. Use Apps

We use our phones A LOT right? And technology has and will continue to grow, evolve and expand. You don’t have to be left behind! There are some really awesome apps you could download that can help in causing you to spend time with God wherever you are, at whatever time.

Some of the apps I’d recommend and personally use are:

· You version Bible – If you don’t have a physical, hard copy bible, you could use this app. It has the whole bible plus the different versions and different languages as well. It also has a ton of devotionals, as I mentioned earlier. This can be a great tool to get started on your walk with God and are just starting out in seeking a relationship with Him.

· Read Scripture – This is another cool one. This app not only has the whole bible, but it sectioned into different themes and specifies the story a scripture covers. For example, Creation and the Fall of man or Jesus’ ministry. When you select a certain story, there’s an illustration being drawn and a narrator in the background explaining what’s happening as the story progresses. Isn’t that cool?! This can be instrumental in facilitating your understanding of the bible in an in-depth way, and it’s quite entertaining if I do say so myself.

· Abide - This app particularly specializes in meditation of the word of God. You could search for meditations with scriptures for a particular topic. There are meditations for anxiety, sleep, depression, marriage, finances, healing, worry, doubt, fear and so many more. They also have bedtime stories! So, if you at times have trouble sleeping, you could put the app, choose a meditation that specializes in sleep, or a bedtime story and a narrator with a very soothing voice will take you through the meditation and even pray over you to have a peaceful sleep. I’ll however mention that the app has many features that needs one to purchase the premium version to unlock, despite that though, there are endless options to choose from in the free version.

I’ve left links that would re-direct you to download these apps from Google playstore, they’re all free btw!

Lastly, I’ll mention that you don’t have to feel pressure to be NO ONE but yourself in your quiet time. You don’t have to do it like anyone else. Don’t be so caught up with the nitty gritties, like the amount of time you spend. Someone may be able to spend 2 hours, and maybe you can do 30 minutes, that’s ok! We’re all different and in different places in our processes and walks with God, and He also has us in different journeys. Embrace yours and make the most out of it! Keep showing up and don’t give up.

That’s all for this week loves! I really appreciate you being here and I hope today’s post has empowered you to get your quiet time on.

Scripture to meditate on;

'Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.'
