Toning Your Skin 101

Hello, my lovely readers!

Welcome to yet another post for this week. We’re still on our skincare series, and today we will be talking about toning!

If you're wondering what the heck that is, well I won't waste your time, without further ado, let’s get into it!

What is toning?

Toning is often the next step of one’s skincare routine after cleansing. It’s the most often overlooked step in your skincare routine, but I think it’s still important, and as we progress in this post, I hope that you’ll see why.

Toning refers to using a water-based liquid form that may be infused with skin-soothing ingredients like eucalyptus, peppermint, aloe, and rosewater on your skin. Why is it used? well, let's see;

Why tone?

The purpose of toning is to gently refresh your skin, without stripping it of its natural moisture. It removes any traces of dirt and grime stuck into the pores of your skin, to ensure your face is completely clean. It could also help to tighten your pores, which can reduce the appearance of wrinkles, prematurely. Also, it can act as a moisture boost for your skin, especially if you suffer from dryness.

This is great, especially the cleansing part, because in last week’s post on cleansing, remember we found out that the cleaner your pores are, the better the products you use in the next steps of your skincare routine will work.

What makes a good toner?

Well, it depends on your skin type, needs, and the issues you’d like to improve. A great toner is one that moisturizes your skin, instead of drying out. Some products in the market, which can be used as toners, have astringent properties. An astringent is a product that causes dryness. An example of a product like this is Witch Hazel.

My personal favorite is Rosewater.

How to use a toner?

A toner is used in both your morning and night routine.

After cleansing your face, apply your toner.

I prefer using a spray bottle because it’s more hygienic, instead, you can use a cotton ball dipped in the toner, then apply it all over your face.
