My updated night skincare routine (for oily and acne-prone skin)

Here’s a simple night skincare routine if you have oily and acne-prone skin 😊.

Hello once again, and welcome to another blog post. This one’s kind of a continuation of the last post I did earlier this month. Last time, I shared with you my current morning skincare routine, today, I will share my current night skincare routine.

This one may be a bit longer because I do quite a lot at night. Aside from the basics like cleansing, toning, and moisturizing, there are also some extra things I do at night to keep my skin looking yummy. If this is something you’re interested in, by all means, keep reading.

So, my night routine has the basics in place, i.e cleansing, toning, and moisturizing. Obviously, I don’t apply sunscreen at night, because it’s at night, you don’t need sunscreen haha. Just thought I’d mention that.

Other than the basics, I do various treatments like exfoliation and using various face masks. I believe it is best to do these steps at night because when you’re asleep, your skin gets to rest, renew and rejuvenate and the products you use at night work more effectively than if you were to use them during the day when you’re out and about.

Anyway, here’s what my night routine usually looks like;

Step 1: Makeup Removal

Step 2: Cleansing

Step 3: Exfoliating (2-3 times a week) or putting on a face mask (once a week)

Step 4: Toning or Slugging (I will elaborate more on this)

Step 5: Moisturizing, when I don’t do slugging

Just like the previous post, I will elaborate more on what a particular step entails, how to do it, and the product I use.

1. Makeup Removal

I’m not much of a full-face makeup girl, not because I don’t like makeup, but because I do not know how to use these makeup products like foundation, concealer, and such. I promised myself last year that I would take the time to learn, but haha, we’re still here. I’d really like to one day though.

I still use makeup, just mostly eye makeup like eye shadow, eyeliner, and mascara (my favorite!)

So, whenever I do, I make sure that I get it all off before bed.

To do this, I use Garnier micellar water. This stuff melts off your makeup and is much better than using coconut oil or olive oil.

It works amazingly, but it sometimes stings my eyes.

How I use it

I get a piece of cotton wool, put a few drops of the micellar water on it, and swipe the makeup off.

Even though I don’t wear makeup anywhere else on my skin, I like to swipe it all over my face, to get rid of all the dirt and gunk accumulated during the day.

2. Cleansing

This step is the same as in my morning routine. Only this time I cleanse for 60 seconds. There’s this rule called the 60-second rule, whereby you should wash your face for 60 seconds. This time is enough to allow the active ingredients in the cleanser to really get into your skin and leave your pores clean and fresh.

I use the Garnier Even and Matte Vitamin C cleanser.

How I use it

I wet my face with lukewarm water, put a little in my hands, lather up, and massage it all over my skin for 60 seconds. I make sure to reach all parts of my face and be a bit more thorough, since it’s at night and my skin has accumulated lots of dirt, grime, and product build-up, including leftover sunscreen that I applied in the morning.

After 60 seconds, I rinse off with lukewarm water.

3. Exfoliation (2-3 times a week) or putting on a face mask (once a week)

The next step on some nights is exfoliation. I don’t do this every night, because it’s recommended to exfoliate only a few times a week. Exfoliating every day is likely to damage your skin barrier, cause micro tears and worsen your breakouts, texture, and dark spots.

In this step, I use the Garnier facial scrub. To be honest, I bought this product accidentally, thinking that it was the cleanser because they look so similar! But I’m glad that I did because this scrub is itttt.

I like it because it has a bit of texture, but not too rough. Therefore, it will exfoliate your skin without being too harsh.

How I use it

After cleansing, while my skin is still damp, I put a little bit in my hands and massage it all over my face, for a couple of seconds. I rinse off with lukewarm water and that’s it.

Putting on a face mask

Once a week, I put on a face mask. Face masks can be amazing on your skin. It can be a fun way to relax and have a little at-home spa night. Plus, you should choose masks that target various skin concerns.

Remember to put on a mask right after cleansing, and follow the instructions given.

For example, my skin has a history of oiliness and acne. So, I use the Garnier Charcoal Mask which absorbs excess oiliness and cleanses my pores, which prevents breakouts.

Sometimes, my skin gets dry and needs a moisture boost, so I will choose a sheet mask like the Garnier ampoule mask with hyaluronic acid because that ingredient significantly helps with making your skin hydrated and moisturized.

If my skin is feeling irritated, I use this P.O Care Aloe mask. I like to put it in the fridge for about 30 minutes, then apply it. My skin relaxes almost immediately. Also, Aloe Vera is amazing for the skin.

How I use the face masks

Garnier Charcoal Mask

After cleansing, I apply a thin layer all over my skin, paying more attention to my problem areas. I leave it for about 10 minutes, then I rinse off.

Sheet masks

After cleansing, I open it up and put it on my face. I move it around so that it fits well, and I leave it on for about 10 minutes.

I then remove it and massage the extra liquids into my skin. Please note that you are not supposed to rinse your face after putting on a sheet mask.

P.O Care Aloe Face Mask

After cleansing, I apply a thin layer of the mask all over my face and leave it on for about 30 minutes. Then I rinse off.

4. Toning

This is the next step in my routine. I use the toner as I use it in the morning. I use the Nimo Naturals Hydrating Toner.

How I use it

After cleansing, or after rinsing off my exfoliator or mask, while my face is still damp, I put about 2-3 pumps of the toner in my hands, and massage it all over my skin. The reason why I leave it damp is that hyaluronic acid works better on damp skin.

Slugging

Okay, this has nothing to do with slugs. So slugging is a technique whereby you apply a layer of Vaseline on your skin to add moisture and prevent transepidermal water loss.

I usually do this occasionally, especially when my skin feels a bit texturized, which is a sign of dehydration. I also use this method to repair my skin barrier when it’s damaged due to sun exposure, harsh products, or dry weather.

The only thing you need is Vaseline.

How I use it

After cleansing, or rinsing off my exfoliator or mask, I take a small amount of Vaseline and apply a thin layer all over my face.

I would recommend not using this if you have severe active acne, as it may clog your pores and makes your breakouts worse. Also, be easy with the Vaseline, don’t put too much!

5. Moisturizing, when I do not slug

So, this is the last step in my night routine, and it’s the same as in my morning routine. I use the Dove Intensive Cream.

How I use it

After toning, I take a little bit of moisturizer in my hands, and I massage it all over my face until it fully absorbs into my skin. When I wake up, my skin feels soft, moisturized, and looks vibrant.

Alright, that’s all I do in my night skincare routine. I usually take my night skincare routine as a way to take care of myself and pour into my cup. And, I get to take care of my skin and leave it better and healthier than ever.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this post, and may consider getting some of the products I have mentioned and even adding some steps into your routine.

I will see you on the next one.

Xoxo,

BK.
