My updated morning skincare routine (for oily and acne-prone skin)

Updated: Oct 12, 2022

Here’s a simple morning skincare routine if you have oily and acne-prone skin :).

Hello guys and welcome back to another blog post! It’s been a minute since I posted here and I know this year I have been quite inconsistent with posting. There’s been a lot going on, but the vision is still alive! Let’s jump right into today’s post.

So, I have shared my skincare routine in the past. If you want to know more about my skincare journey, my routines, tips, and information I have shared on this platform, then check out the following posts below. You can either pause here and go and read the posts I’ll share, then come back to this one. Or, you can keep reading and then look at the posts later.

My current morning routine includes the following;

Step 1: Cleanser

Step 2: Toner

Step 3: Moisturizer

Step 4: Sunscreen

I will elaborate more on each step, including why it is important, how to do it best and what products I use.

1. Cleansing

Cleansing is basically cleaning your skin off of the dirt, sweat, build-up from applied products, and pollutants that have settled on it over time. Since this is the morning routine, there’s no need to be super thorough with this step, as you’ve been in bed all night and your skin isn’t that dirty.

Some people even skip this step and just rinse their faces with cold water. I’d recommend that especially if you have dry skin.

But for oily skin people like me, our skin may be producing more oil than the average person, so there is a need to stay on top of the cleansing game.

I use the Garnier even and matte vitamin C cleansing foam in this step.

I have used this for ages and I love it because;

It is easily available

It lathers easily

It cleanses my skin without drying it out.

It has vitamin c, lemon, and salicylic acid as its ingredients, all of which are great for balancing oiliness and keeping acne under control.

How I use it

With clean hands, I wet my face, take a pea-sized amount of the cleanser, lather it up in my hands, then cleanse for about 15-30 seconds. Then rinse off with lukewarm-cold water.

I am much gentler in the mornings since my skin doesn’t have much build-up from the night before.

2. Toning

Toning is using a water-based liquid solution, and this is done right after cleansing. Some toners help to treat various skin concerns, hydrate the skin or clean up any remaining build-up that the cleanser didn’t.

The toner I use is the Nimo Naturals Hydrating toner, which is particularly focused on hydrating my skin.

I also struggle with enlarged pores on my cheeks area, this hydrating toner helps to hydrate my skin, making it plumper, so the pores appear smaller.

This toner has hyaluronic acid and glycerin, which are amazing for hydrating the skin.

How I use it

After cleansing, I pat dry my skin with a paper towel, put about two pumps of the toner in my hands, and gently massage it into my skin. I just apply one layer since more than one makes my skin oilier.

3. Moisturizer

Do not skip moisturizer, my fellow oily skin buddies!

I used to do this thing in the past whereby I would skip on the moisturizer because I thought my skin produces enough oil. I was wrong. If you skip moisturizer, your skin will produce even more oil to compensate for the lack of moisture, making your skin even oilier.

It’s quite strange, innit?

So, even if your skin is oily, do not skip the moisturizer. Choose a lightweight, gel-based moisturizer that does not leave your skin greasy. I recommend the one I use,

The dove intensive cream. It is moisturizing, light, easily available, and quite affordable. It’s one of my favorite products!

How I use it

After toning, I take a small swoop with my index finger and massage it all over my face.

4. Sunscreen

The last step is probably the most important one, sunscreen!

I think by this time everyone knows you should wear sunscreen every single day. Whether it’s the coldest and most gloomy day, or the sunniest and brightest day, whether you’ll be indoors or outdoors all day, you need to wear sunscreen.

Due to global warming and climate change, the sun’s rays can reach us more than ever, making us prone to skin conditions like sunburn, hyperpigmentation, and in the worst cases, skin cancer.

Choose a sunscreen that protects you from both UVA and UVB sun rays, and has an SPF of at least 30. The higher the SPF, the better. Also, remember to reapply it regularly especially if you will be outdoors.

Sunscreen is the one product that tops off all products. It protects and preserves your skin, so all the other products that you use can work better. If you want to treat literally any skincare concern, sunscreen will significantly help you to reach your goals.

I use the Nivea shine control sunscreen, which is perfect for oily skin.

If you have oily skin, you’ve likely seen your face get shiny as the day progresses, which can be quite annoying. This sunscreen prevents that shine and helps to keep the oiliness in control.

It also blends so easily into the skin and never leaves a white cast! It’s also one of my favorite products.

How I use it

After moisturizing, I apply two fingers long of the sunscreen all over my face and neck. I massage it into the skin and that’s it.

That’s all I do in the mornings for my skincare routine. It’s simple, straightforward, and, takes a short time.

I hope you enjoyed this one, and have learned something.

BK.
